Serverless Document Synthesis: Building EWUmate Services on Azure Functions

1. Problem: The Academic Cover Page Dilemma

Every semester, students at East West University submit hundreds of physical assignments, lab reports, and term project proposals. Departmental grading rubrics penalize submissions with incorrect faculty designations, misplaced university logos, or missing section numbers.

EWUmate Services automates this document compilation in the cloud. By submitting a simple JSON payload with course code and section, students receive a vectorized PDF formatted to official university guidelines in under 380 milliseconds.

2. Technical Implementation: PyMuPDF Vector Generation

Using PyMuPDF (fitz), text and emblem vectors are drawn directly onto coordinate grids with mathematical typography rules:

  • Automated font size adjustment preventing student title overflows.
  • Direct binary response streaming without writing temporary files to serverless container disks, reducing container memory overhead to under 45MB.
